obama opposed the fcc's proposal. so did senators joe biden and hillary clinton. but now, president obama's man at the fcc -- they were friends in law school -- apparently wants to do what the republicans couldn't do under president bush, and to do it behind the scenes, out of sight, with no public hearings. several public interest groups, civil rights organizations and labor unions opposed the move, and last week, senator bernie sanders and several of his colleagues called on chairman genachowski to hold off. bernie sanders is an outspoken opponent of media consolidation. he sees it as a threat to democracy. once the mayor of burlington, vermont, he served 16 years in the house of representatives and was recently re-elected to his second term in the senate. he's the longest serving independent in the history of congress. he was in new york earlier this week and we met for this interview. welcome. good to see you again. >> good to be with you, bill. >> this is a strong letter, inspired one of your colleagues in the senate says, by you. what's the beef? >> what the chairmanf the fcc

of the nation's governors today. actually i think they're meeting with vice president biden. then governors will be meeting with some of the congressional leadership, as well. but you guys are watching this, we know this is drama and theater. do you think a deal gets struck at the end of the day? >> i do. i have to say, i still think we'll get a last minute deal. i just cannot imagine that congress will allow to us go over the cliff. so i think the ramifications for the economy are too significant. i think we're watching whatever you want to call it, all of the politics playing out, but i still think in the end we'll get a last minute deal. >> i agree. and i think even though the sides are far apart, you have things on the table now. so you can say you're here at 800, 1.6, you kind of -- it gets you somewhere close. somebody will try to say 1.3 versus 1.1, but if you see publicly what they're stating and hopefully privately other things are going on, but it will get done, but it will be very slow. >> john boehner with the proposal he put on the table, i did see commentary from som

biden share a love of bargains, both of them shopping at costco recently. and the baltimore sun has this headline on their front page -- the storm caused $127 million of damage in maryland. now to republican caller in california, sandy. caller: i just went through an experience with my mother who went from the hospital to a nursing home and was told she could not have any rehabilitation services, that she was only allowed to stay in the nursing home seven days. then we had to make arrangements with hospice. they will all the paper that seven days. and she has to pay for everything else honor own. if hospice came to her house, she will have to pay. she paid into medicare many years. i think all seniors need to be aware and be prepared that this is what will happen to them. that's my experience. host: in philadelphia, rick is a democratic caller. caller: i cannot believe i got through. the last time i spoke with c- span was 2003. give me about a minute and 30 seconds. host: go! caller: i think barack obama should keep doing what he is doing, hold his ground. i think it is cold hearted

do think she'd be the front-runner. i think joe biden will run as well. and so you're going to have two different generations at each other. and it will be an interesting contrast. if jeb bush decides that he wants to run yet again. we ould have a clinton/bush contest. >> yeah, and nobody knows, but if my impression is at a time like this when a woman has had such a rich and varied life in so many important positions, when history comes calling, you can't say no. >> well, also when everybody you meet, abroad, at home, every day tells you that you are truly the best person to be the next president of the united states, which is what a lot of people are telling her, that is hard to resist. here's one to read which is that i do hear that president bill clinton is very eager for her to run. that he sits there on his plane and he games out the scenario for what a run may look like. so if everybody including your husband is telling you to do it, that's hard to resist. >> but for the same reason, he believes in her, but also history. >> you mentioned the world, what they're telling hillary
